Well... Obviously, this post is ~2 months late, but it's better to it now than never.
My family and I were taking a trip from Boston to Calgary. This trip totaled 5 segments, 2 on American and 3 on Delta. This is my first time reviewing Delta, so it was pretty exciting.
Booking the flights - American Airlines
When we booked our flight on American Airlines, the original routing came like this:
American Airlines Departure Day: Wednesday, August 24th
Fare Code: T
From BOSTON (BOS)
Departure Time: 8:45 AM
To: PITTSBURGH (PIT)
Arrival Time: 10:30 AM
OPERATED BY REPUBLIC AIRLINES AS AMERICAN EAGLE CHECK-IN WITH AMERICAN EAGLE
From: PITTSBURGH (PIT)
Departure Time: 12:04 PM
To: DALLAS FT WORTH (DFW)
Arrival Time: 2:00 PM
From: DALLAS FT WORTH (DFW)
Departure Time: 5:20 PM
To: CALGARY INTL AB (YYC)
Arrival Time: 8:17 PM
In total, we used 37.5 K miles for the three of us. As always when you book using miles, the airline changes your itinerary. This is why instead of the 5:20-8:17 PM flight from Dallas/Fort Worth to Calgary, they made our flight from DFW to YYC on the morning flight, departing from 10:30. Because of this, we had to switch our PIT-DFW flight. If we changed this to the earlier flight, we wouldn't be able to catch the PIT-DFW flight and the BOS-PIT flight that we had originally booked was the first flight to PIT of the day. To deal with this, American Airlines actually upped our value on the itinerary from the original itinerary by offering us a direct flight from Boston to Dallas on flight 175. The funny thing is that when we booked the original itinerary, the itinerary from Boston to Dallas on flight 175 and then the noon flight to Calgary would have cost us a total of 120K because it was an AAnytime award. By switching the flights, we've missed the flight on an MD-80 which we desperately wanted AND the airline had to take us off a virtually empty booked MD-80 and put us on a basically full A321. This made a change a Lose-Lose.
Booking the flights - Delta
WOW. Delta has changed so much of itinerary. Not the actual times and flights, though... Only the airplanes that we really wanted to try.
Calgary - Salt Lake City (CRJ-700)
Salt Lake City - Detroit (Airbus A320)
Detroit - Boston (Airbus A320)
First of all, the first flight from Calgary to Salt Lake City was first scheduled to be operated by a (Very New) CRJ-900. Then, Delta kept on swapping between the CRJ-900 and the CRJ-700 around every 3 weeks. By doing this, they defaulted our original seats that would be better suited for the CRJ aircraft in the back, which they kept on taking away.
Our next two flights were supposed to be on a Boeing 737-800 and an MD-80, but got changed (again) to an A320.
Anyway, we had an awesome trip, so stay tuned for the much more detailed trip report.
